How to Warm Up Before Strength Training (Without a 20-Minute Circus)
A short warm-up for gym strength days — light cardio, session-matched mobility, and ramp-up sets so working sets feel ready.
In short
Raise your temperature briefly, mobilise the joints you will use, then do two to three light ramp-up sets on the first main lift so the first working set does not feel like a cold start.
A good warm-up is short and specific. It prepares the pattern you are about to train — it is not a second cardio class before the real workout.
Three simple blocks
### 1. Get warm (2–5 minutes)
Easy bike, rower, or brisk walk is enough. You want a light sweat and easier joint movement, not fatigue.
### 2. Move what you will load
Pick a few drills that match the session:
- Squat or hinge day: bodyweight squat, hip hinge to mid-shin, ankle rocks
- Push day: arm circles, scapular push-ups, light Machine Chest Press or push-up pattern
- Pull day: band pull-aparts, hang or scapular shrugs, light Seated Row Machine or Lat Pulldown feeler sets
- Core finishers later: a short Dead Bug or Bird Dog primer is optional
Skip random stretch marathons that do not show up in your lifts.
### 3. Ramp into the first lift
For your first compound — for example Goblet Squat, Romanian Deadlift, or Bench Press — do 2–3 ascending sets:
- Empty bar or very light set for groove
- A moderate set
- One near-working set with fewer reps
Then start the planned working sets.
What you can skip
- Long static stretching before heavy work if it leaves you feeling loose and unstable
- Exhausting core circuits that steal energy from the main lifts
- Foam rolling every muscle group when you only have 45 minutes total
Save longer mobility for rest days or after training if you enjoy it.
Warm-up and logging
Treat ramp-up sets as preparation, not PRs. Log working sets clearly so progress stays readable. For session structure tips, see how to log workouts for progress. If joints feel beat up for more than a day or two, compare that with rest days and recovery tracking before adding more volume.
A sample 8-minute template
1. 3 minutes easy bike 2. 8 bodyweight squats + 8 hip hinges 3. Two light sets of today’s first lift
Then train. Consistency beats elaborate warm-up routines you abandon by week two.
