Romanian Deadlift Technique Cues That Keep the Hinge Honest

Practical Romanian Deadlift cues for hinge position, bar path, and tempo so you load the posterior chain without turning every set into a squat.

In short

Keep a soft knee bend, push the hips back until you feel tension in the hamstrings, and lower the bar close to your legs with a controlled tempo — then drive the hips forward to stand tall without yanking the weight.

Barbell Romanian Deadlift demo

The Romanian Deadlift is one of the clearest hip-hinge patterns in the gym. Done well, it trains the hamstrings, glutes, and back in a position you can load progressively. Done poorly, it turns into a squat with a rounded upper back.

Set up before you pull

  • Stand with feet roughly hip-width apart
  • Hold the bar with a shoulder-width grip
  • Soften the knees slightly — they stay mostly fixed through the set
  • Brace lightly through the midsection and keep the chest open

Think “hips move, knees stay put” more than “sit down.”

The lowering phase matters most

Push the hips back as the bar travels down the thighs. Keep the bar close to your legs. Stop when you feel a strong hamstring stretch or when your torso cannot stay long without rounding — whichever comes first.

Useful cues:

  • “Push the belt buckle back”
  • “Long spine, soft knees”
  • “Slide the bar down the legs”

Rushing the eccentric is the usual mistake. Control the lowering phase so each rep teaches the pattern.

Stand up without cheating

Drive the floor away and bring the hips forward until you are tall. Squeeze the glutes at the top, but do not lean back or shrug the bar up with the traps.

If the weight feels like it is pulling you into a rounded back, reduce load and rebuild the hinge.

Where it fits in a session

Use the Romanian Deadlift after your main squat or press work, or as the primary hinge on a lower-body day. Moderate loads and crisp reps beat grinding heavy sets with sloppy posture.

Common pairings from the same movement family include Trap Bar Deadlift, Stiff-Leg Deadlift, and Barbell Hip Thrust when you want extra glute emphasis later in the week.

Simple progress checklist

Week to week, improve one thing:

  • Same weight with cleaner depth control, or
  • One extra quality rep, or
  • A small load bump once form stays solid

Log the working sets so you can see the trend instead of guessing. For how that history supports overload, see progressive overload and PR tracking. If you are still building your first month of sessions, the beginner gym plan keeps hinge work in a simple weekly shape.
